The HIN is a 12- or 14-character alphanumeric identifier assigned to vessels by the manufacturer or the state. It usually follows the format of three letters for the manufacturer code, followed by five serial numbers, and then four characters indicating the month and year of production.
Example: ABC12345M83H (where “ABC” is the manufacturer code, “12345” is the serial number, and “M83H” indicates a production date of August 1983).
The HIN is typically located on the upper right corner of the transom (rear) of the vessel, or near the stern on the starboard side. It may also be found on the vessel’s title, registration, or insurance documents.
